The HG3 supports both EPON and GPON fiber standards making it more universally compatible, while the HG6 is GPON-only but offers stronger Wi-Fi with 6dBi high-gain antennas. If your ISP uses GPON (e.g. StormFiber, Nayatel) and you want better wireless coverage, the HG6 is the better choice.
Which Pakistani ISPs use GPON compatible with the HG6? β
Major GPON-based ISPs in Pakistan include StormFiber, Nayatel, and FiberNation. PTCL's newer FTTH rollouts also use GPON. You'll need to provide your ISP with the HG6's serial number and MAC address for provisioning.
Do the 6dBi antennas make a noticeable difference? β
Yes, especially in larger homes with thick concrete walls. In a typical 5-marla or larger Pakistani home, the HG6's 6dBi antennas provide noticeably better signal in distant rooms compared to standard 2β3dBi ONT antennas.
Can I use the HG6 without a fiber connection? β
No. The HG6 requires an active GPON fiber connection. It has no Ethernet WAN port. For a standalone router, choose the Tenda AC5 or N301.
Does the ISP need to configure the HG6? β
Initial GPON registration requires your ISP to whitelist the HG6's serial number on their OLT. Once registered, you can configure Wi-Fi settings and LAN independently through the web interface.
